Neither let us be slandered from our duty by false accusations against us, nor frightened from it by menaces of destruction to the government, nor dungeons to ourselves. On 27 February 1860, at Cooper Union, Lincoln said: He had faith in democracy and believed that a strong and united America with unchallengable power could maintain a lasting peace for his country. His policy was built on his confidence in America. Lincoln found this relationship in the best interests of the welfare of the Nation. Such a partnership between the United States and Russia, two countries which were the very antithesis of each other, is considered to have contributed to preventing European intervention in our Civil War and to keeping an Anglo-French alliance from interfering in the Russian-Polish dispute. In spite of ideological differences, national interests and fear of a common foe often produce international partnerships with far-reaching results. It also gives some of the highlights of the visits of the Atlantic and Pacific Squadrons of the Russian Navy to United States Atlantic and Pacific ports. In this pamphlet, the Foundation attempts to acquaint its readers with some of the international involvement at that time.
